How To Approach Prayer

Thursday Psalm 5 11

Have A Wonderful and Blessed Day!!! Put Their Trust In Thee!!!

Psalm 5:1 Give ear to my words, O LORD, consider my meditation.
Psalm 5:2 Hearken unto the voice of my cry, my King, and my God: for unto thee will I pray.
Psalm 5:3 My voice shalt thou hear in the morning, O LORD; in the morning will I direct my prayer unto thee, and will look up.
Psalm 5:4 For thou art not a God that hath pleasure in wickedness: neither shall evil dwell with thee.
Psalm 5:5 The foolish shall not stand in thy sight: thou hatest all workers of iniquity.
Psalm 5:6 Thou shalt destroy them that speak leasing: the LORD will abhor the bloody and deceitful man.
Psalm 5:7 But as for me, I will come into thy house in the multitude of thy mercy: and in thy fear will I worship toward thy holy temple.
Psalm 5:8 Lead me, O LORD, in thy righteousness because of mine enemies; make thy way straight before my face.
Psalm 5:9 For there is no faithfulness in their mouth; their inward part is very wickedness; their throat is an open sepulchre; they flatter with their tongue.
Psalm 5:10 Destroy thou them, O God; let them fall by their own counsels; cast them out in the multitude of their transgressions; for they have rebelled against thee.
Psalm 5:11 But let all those that put their trust in thee rejoice: let them ever shout for joy, because thou defendest them: let them also that love thy name be joyful in thee.
Psalm 5:12 For thou, LORD, wilt bless the righteous; with favour wilt thou compass him as with a shield.

We need to consider the right attitudes God is looking for that are essential to Him responding to and guiding us. Also the right attitude when we go before him in prayer.

Attitude to me is more important: than facts, than the past, than education, than money, than circumstances, than failures, than successes, than what other people think or say or do, than appearances, than giftedness or skill. It will make or break a a church, a home, a relationship. The remarkable thing is we have a choice every day regarding the Attitude we will embrace for that day. We cannot change our past. We cannot change the inevitable. The only thing we can do is play on the one thing we have, and that is our Attitude. I am convinced that life is 10% what happens to me and 90% how I react to it. And so it is with you…We are in charge of our attitudes.” Charles Swindoll
In life, we learn that the key to getting results is most often based on how we approach it:
-Our teachers in school
-Our bosses at work
-Our spouses
-Our Friends

1. My Attitude of Prayer: Serious – 5:1-3

Call upon the Lord with seriousness of heart. Prayer is to be taken in seriousness. It needs to be respectful. It needs to be done with complete attention on the Lord. If your mind is in other places then don’t bother.

B. Prayer should never be taken lightly or superficially:
It is a personal conversation with our Father and King (2my king and my God)
a. give ear = to have the normal faculty of hearing, with a focus that understanding is the result
1Peter 3:12 For the eyes of the Lord are over the righteous, and his ears are open unto their prayers: but the face of the Lord is against them that do evil.

c. We are His children (1 John. 3:1)
1John 3:1 Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not.

It is asking God to hear what is on our hearts and what is important to us.
a. What we have to say matters to God –
Psalm 116:1 I love the LORD, because he hath heard my voice and my supplications.
Psalm 116:2 Because he hath inclined his ear unto me, therefore will I call upon him as long as I live.

We are His children and He loves and listens to us.
It is done with expectant faith.
God wants us to believe in His ability to answer any request
God wants us to submit ourselves to His will in the answer.
We pray to a holy God so we must approach Him in holiness – 1st Jn. 1:9 – If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
God hates the sinful condition and its consequences (5-6) –
Proverbs 6:16 These six things doth the LORD hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him:
Proverbs 6:17 A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood,
Proverbs 6:18 An heart that deviseth wicked imaginations, feet that be swift in running to mischief,
Proverbs 6:19 A false witness that speaketh lies, and he that soweth discord among brethren.

What attracts God is a humble heart (humbling ourselves before the throne of grace)
James 4:6 But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble.

To seek God in the right spirit
a. Mercy the goodness or love of God shown to those who are in misery or distress, despite what they deserve. Other related words are loving-kindness, love, loyalty, and faithfulness.
b. Fear reverence and awe.
c. Worship expression of worth to God.
To seek God’s leading Psalm 25:3-5:
Psalm 25:3 Yea, let none that wait on thee be ashamed: let them be ashamed which transgress without cause.
Psalm 25:4 Shew me thy ways, O LORD; teach me thy paths.
Psalm 25:5 Lead me in thy truth, and teach me: for thou art the God of my salvation; on thee do I wait all the day.

4. My Attitude of the World: Separated:
Psalm 5:9 For there is no faithfulness in their mouth; their inward part is very wickedness; their throat is an open sepulchre; they flatter with their tongue.
Psalm 5:10 Destroy thou them, O God; let them fall by their own counsels; cast them out in the multitude of their transgressions; for they have rebelled against thee.

There should be a distinction between us and the world (God responds to the prayers of a holy people)
2Corinthians 6:17 Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you,
2Corinthians 6:18 And will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty.

A difference in our talk, Psalm 19:14 Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O LORD, my strength, and my redeemer.

A difference in our walk, Ephesians 5:15 See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise,
Ephesians 5:16 Redeeming the time, because the days are evil.

How do you approach God in prayer?
Needs to be with respect, holiness, without distraction. Just between you and him. No rushing. Remember you are talking to a Holy God, Your Father in Heaven who created you. He died for you on the cross suffering terribly. Without him we would suffer terrible torment for all eternity in Hell. Can you find time for respectful prayer for him?

SWEET HOUR OF PRAYER
Sweet hour of prayer! sweet hour of prayer!
That calls me from a world of care,
And bids me at my Father’s throne
Make all my wants and wishes known.
In seasons of distress and grief,
My soul has often found relief
And oft escaped the tempter’s snare
By thy return, sweet hour of prayer!
Sweet hour of prayer! sweet hour of prayer!
The joys I feel, the bliss I share,
Of those whose anxious spirits burn
With strong desires for thy return!
With such I hasten to the place
Where God my Savior shows His face,
And gladly take my station there,
And wait for thee, sweet hour of prayer!
Sweet hour of prayer! sweet hour of prayer!
Thy wings shall my petition bear
To Him whose truth and faithfulness
Engage the waiting soul to bless.
And since He bids me seek His face,
Believe His Word and trust His grace,
I’ll cast on Him my every care,
And wait for thee, sweet hour of prayer!
Sweet hour of prayer! sweet hour of prayer!
May I thy consolation share,
Till, from Mount Pisgah’s lofty height,
I view my home and take my flight:
This robe of flesh I’ll drop and rise
To seize the everlasting prize;
And shout, while passing through the air,
“Farewell, farewell, sweet hour of prayer!”

Love and Prayers
