Are You Selfish?

Tuesday Deuteronomy 31 8

Have A Wonderful Day!!! Just How Selfish Are We!!!

IT IS MY TURN, WHAT ABOUT ME, I DIDN’T GET MINE YET, HEY ITS NOT FAIR, I DIDN’T GET ANY, ME, MINE, I, SHE GOT SOME ALREADY, I HATE THEM THEY ARE THE FAVORITES;

Just looking at these expressions turn my stomach. Some may even laugh and think I am exaggerating a bit. I know I have a difficult time having fellowship with someone who is selfish. I know of someone who I have talked with and if I say “pray for Betty she has had an awful time with this illness” she comes back with “well I have been very sick lately too”.
What does our Lord say about selfishness?

Philippians 2:3 Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves.
Philippians 2:4 Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others.
Even a young child with a selfish nature it is very difficult to enjoy that child. I was blessed my children were always very willing to share, they were very thoughtful to others, that was a huge blessing to me. However when a child was selfish to them it was difficult a bit more due to the fact that I knew my children were sharing with them. It did teach them at a very early age why it was so important to share and the ugliness of selfishness.
Selfishness or empty conceit is often expressed by building up oneself while tearing down
someone else. It is one of the “works of the flesh” according to what we read in Galatians 5:20.
Selfishness caused the children of Israel to “willfully put God to the test by demanding the food they craved” Selfishness caused the rich young ruler to turn his back on Jesus, he didn’t want to give up all the material wealth, toys he had gained here on earth. Selfishness ruins friendships,
hinders prayer.
James 4:3 Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may
consume it upon your lusts. and is the product of earthly wisdom.
James 3:13 Who is a wise man and endued with knowledge among you? let him shew out of a good conversation his works with meekness of wisdom.
James 3:14 But if ye have bitter envying and strife in your hearts, glory not, and lie not against the truth.
James 3:15 This wisdom descendeth not from above, but is earthly, sensual, devilish.
James 3:16 For where envying and strife is, there is confusion and every evil work.
James 3:17 But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be intreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy.
James 3:18 And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace of them that make peace.

The opposite of selfishness is also found in Philippians 2:
Philippians 2:1 If there be therefore any consolation in Christ, if any comfort of love, if any fellowship of the Spirit, if any bowels and mercies,
Philippians 2:2 Fulfil ye my joy, that ye be likeminded, having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind.
Philippians 2:3 Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves.

Combating the sin of selfish ambition requires genuine humility. Unpretentious humility restores and grows relationships. Being humble involves having a true perspective about ourselves in relation to God. “Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the measure of faith God has given you”
Prayer and a love of Scripture are necessary as well. “Turn my heart toward your statutes and not toward selfish gain”.
Psalm 119:36 Incline my heart unto thy testimonies, and not to covetousness.
Psalm 119:37 Turn away mine eyes from beholding vanity; and quicken
thou me in thy way.
Psalm 119:38 Stablish thy word unto thy servant, who is devoted
to thy fear. Love covers a multitude of sins, including selfishness. If we are truly “devoted to
one another in brotherly love”,
Romans 12:8 Or he that exhorteth, on exhortation: he
that giveth, let him do it with simplicity; he that ruleth, with diligence; he that
sheweth mercy, with cheerfulness.
Romans 12:9 Let love be without dissimulation. Abhor that which is evil; cleave to that which is good.
Romans 12:10 Be kindly affectioned one to another with brotherly love; in honour preferring one another; we cannot be selfish. Having the attitude of Christ is to demonstrate tenderness and compassion for all those we come in contact with.
Another sure cure for selfishness is to know where our treasure is. The Christian holds the things of this world loosely because he is laying up “treasures in heaven”.

Matthew 6:18 That thou appear not unto men to fast, but unto thy Father which is in secret: and thy Father, which seeth in secret, shall reward thee openly.
Matthew 6:19 Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal:
Matthew 6:20 But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal:
Matthew 6:21 For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.
In Acts we are told:
Acts 20:35 I have shewed you all things, how that so labouring ye ought to support the weak, and to remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he said, It is more blessed to give than to receive. And he lives according to the truth that “God loves a cheerful giver”.
In Corinthians:
2Corinthians 9:6 But this I say, He which soweth sparingly shall reap also sparingly; and he which soweth bountifully shall reap also bountifully.
2Corinthians 9:7 Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver.
2Corinthians 9:8 And God is able to make all grace abound toward you; that ye, always having all sufficiency in all things, may abound to every good work:

What is selfish ambition? It means to be self-seeking and always looking out for one’s own interests above the interests of anyone else. In other words, selfishly ambitious people are those who will electioneer for office and court popular applause by deceit. They are always putting themselves forward without reference to truth. They are full of such slogans as, “Make way for me! I am better than all of you. Vote for me, and I will be your savior.” The Antichrist is an example of such a politician. When he comes, he will be characterized by selfish ambition, and he will use deceit and trickery to promote himself. I have met a selfish person that was a pleasure to be around. I have never never a selfish person that I enjoyed talking to for than a few minutes. They could be the most beautiful person on the outside but are truly very ugly. They make the worst friends, and are always out for self. If you have issues with selfishness get HELP with that immediately, if they are thinking of you beware there is something in it for them.
Some Bible Examples:
Psalm 78:18 And they tempted God in their heart by asking meat for their lust.

Mark 10:37 They said unto him, Grant unto us that we may sit, one on thy right hand, and the other on thy left hand, in thy glory.
John 6:26 Jesus answered them and said, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Ye seek me, not because ye saw the miracles, but because ye did eat of the loaves, and were filled.

WHEN LOVE SHINES IN
Jesus comes with pow’r to gladden,
When love shines in,

Love will teach us how to pray,
Love will drive the gloom away,
Turn our darkness into day,
When love shines in.
When love shines in,
When love shines in,
How the heart is tuned to singing,
When love shines in;
When love shines in,
When love shines in,
Joy and peace to others bringing,
When love shines in.
How the world will grow with beauty,
When love shines in,
And the heart rejoice in duty,
When love shines in.

When love shines in,
And the heaviest burden lighter,

And our life in Heav’n begun,
There will be no need of sun,
When love shines in.
